Anna Chan, a jeweller and fashion designer, made the best of a bad circumstance. The New York-based artist visited Robert Moses State Park, where she spent her days relaxing on the beach. She started sand sculpting there because she wanted to make 12 art pieces for a calendar in 2021. Creating gorgeous, symmetrical mosaics and real-life animal pictures quickly became a “obsession.” It appears that many of us discovered new hobbies and intriguing things to do during the pandemic. Some of us picked up essential skills like cooking and gardening, were interested in a healthy lifestyle and began participating in sports outside, or went to our creative side and began painting or creating DIY projects. Because the range of activities was limited and travel was out of the question, we all had to get inventive.

Ben Nunery and his young daughter Olivia have released a powerful and moving sequence of photographs in which they bid farewell to their house and to their mother and wife Ali, who died of cancer in 2011 at the age of 31. (R.I.P.). Ben and Ali tied the knot in 2009. They decided to shoot their wedding photos in the home that would be their future home because they had recently acquired it. Ben and Olivia had to move into a new home together after Ali died only two and a half years later. Melanie Tracy Pace, Ali’s sister, joined them for one last photoshoot in the home where Ben and Ali had their wedding day images taken and where they had lived together. The resulting shots are a heartfelt and lovely farewell to Ali and their former home, with some of them even shadowing the original wedding-day photos. “Many people have asked me how I felt while conducting the photo shoot,” Ben said in a blog post about the encounter. What I want them to understand is that this isn’t a story about bereavement, loss, or pain. Yes, I’ve had such feelings and continue to do so, but that’s not what I want people to see in these photographs. ‘This is a love story,’ says the narrator. Take a look at the photographs below, as well as some further details on Ben, Olivia, and Ali’s tale.
