BTS’s ‘Arirang’ Soars to No. 1 on Billboard 200, Marking a Historic Sales Milestone for a Group

Global sensation BTS has once again demonstrated their unparalleled influence, securing their seventh chart-topping album on the Billboard 200 with the release of ‘Arirang’. This achievement is particularly significant as it marks the most substantial sales week for an album by a group in over a decade, cementing their status as a dominant force in the music industry.

A Dominant Chart Performance

The new album, ‘Arirang’, debuted at the summit of the chart with an impressive 641,000 equivalent album units. Of this remarkable total, 532,000 units were pure album sales, highlighting the dedicated purchasing power of their fanbase. This grand entrance positions ‘Arirang’ as the album with the largest first-week unit count since Taylor Swift’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, which achieved over four million units last year.

Looking at pure album sales alone, ‘Arirang’ boasts the strongest sales week for any album since ‘Showgirl’, which sold 3.48 million copies. The last group to surpass such a sales figure in a single week was One Direction with ‘Midnight Memories’ in 2013, which sold 547,000 units. A significant contributor to ‘Arirang’s’ massive sales was its strong vinyl performance, with 208,000 copies sold across 17 distinct vinyl variations. This makes it the sixth biggest vinyl sales week for an album in the modern era, with Taylor Swift holding the top five records.

Continuing a Legacy of Success

This latest triumph adds to BTS’s already extensive list of No. 1 albums, which includes ‘Love Yourself ‘Tear” (2018), ‘Love Yourself ‘Answer” (2018), ‘Map of the Soul : Persona’ (2019), ‘Map of the Soul : 7’ (2020), ‘Be’ (2020), and ‘Proof’ (2022). The group’s return to the top of the charts follows the completion of mandatory military service by its members—Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook.

To celebrate the launch of ‘Arirang’, BTS engaged in a series of high-profile promotional activities. These included a spectacular concert held in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square, which was broadcast globally via Netflix, and the debut of a feature-length documentary on the streaming service, offering fans an intimate look into their journey.

Other Chart Highlights

Elsewhere on the highly competitive Billboard 200, country star Luke Combs secured his seventh top 10 entry with ‘The Way I Am’, debuting at No. 2. Morgan Wallen’s ‘I’m the Problem’ landed at No. 3, followed by Harry Styles’ ‘Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.’ and Don Toliver’s ‘Octane.’ The remaining spots in the top 10 were occupied by Olivia Dean’s ‘The Art of Loving’, Bad Bunny’s ‘Debí Tirar Más Fotos’, Bruno Mars’ ‘The Romantic’, Wallen’s ‘One Thing at a Time’, and the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ soundtrack.
