You’ll find different artists around the world working on different things, but Tomoko Sato from Japan works on fruits and vegetables. Yes! You got that right – fruits and vegetables are Tomoko’s canvas.

Initially a woodworker by profession, Sato got inspired by Thai carving craft in 2004 and switched to carving on vegetables and fruits, turning them into intricate sculptures.

His unique talent to carve out symmetrical patterns and shapes on fruits and vegetables can put you in dilemma whether to eat the fruit or just keep looking at it.

The art of fruit carving is known as kae sa luk in Thailand and requires eye for detail and extreme dexterity. Although apples, strawberries, cucumbers, etc. are the most common choices for fruit carvers, a watermelon is everyone’s favorite for it allows the artists to carve out three-dimensional patterns and structures because of the larger surface area.

The art of fruit and vegetable carving has become quite common now and can be frequently seen in number of ceremonies. However, the level achieved by Tomoko Sato is class-apart.
