Streamlining EU Borders: New App Aims to Cut Wait Times Amidst Biometric System Delays

Recent journeys to Europe have seen travelers encountering extended queues and new biometric requirements at border control points. These changes are a direct result of the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), designed to meticulously record the entry and exit of all non-EU visitors, regardless of visa status, by requiring fingerprints and photographs.

While the EES has undeniably led to significant processing delays, a new mobile application is emerging as a potential solution to help travelers navigate the enhanced border procedures more efficiently.

Understanding Europe’s New Entry/Exit System (EES)

Launched in October 2025, the EES mandates that non-EU nationals submit biometric data, including fingerprints and facial scans, upon entering and exiting the Schengen Area. This comprehensive system aims to bolster border security and streamline migration management across member states.

However, its implementation has not been without challenges. Industry bodies such as Airports Council International Europe, Airlines for Europe (A4E), and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have voiced serious concerns. They report that the EES has exacerbated border control wait times by up to 70 percent, with some travelers experiencing delays of two to three hours. There are fears that these waits could balloon to four hours during the peak summer travel months of July and August 2026, potentially leading to missed connections and significant travel disruption. In response, these organizations have collectively urged the EU to review the system urgently before the busy summer period.

To mitigate the risk of flight delays or missed connections, experts now advise travelers flying through Europe to allocate at least four hours for border formalities.

The “Travel to Europe” App: A Digital Solution

In a proactive move to address the EES-induced delays, some EU member states are adopting the new “Travel to Europe” mobile app. Sweden leads the way as the first nation to fully integrate the app’s functionalities. Non-EU visitors heading to Sweden can now pre-submit their passport data and a facial image up to 72 hours before their arrival or departure at border control. The app also allows for the completion of entry questionnaires in advance, potentially saving valuable time upon arrival.

Portugal is also utilizing the app, though its current capabilities are limited to pre-filling the entry questionnaire, without the option to upload passport data or photos. As more countries implement the EES, the app’s availability is expected to expand, although its features may vary by nation. Travelers are encouraged to check the official “Travel to Europe” webpage before their journey to ascertain which countries participate and what functionalities are available.

Designed for individuals holding a biometric passport who are not EU nationals, the “Travel to Europe” app is an optional tool. While not mandatory, its use can significantly expedite the border crossing process, making journeys smoother and faster by complementing, rather than replacing, traditional border control procedures.

Future Travel: ETIAS and Planning Ahead

Looking ahead, travelers should also be aware of the upcoming European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). This new electronic travel authorization system is slated for launch in the latter half of 2026, contingent on the successful rollout of the EES. ETIAS will become a mandatory requirement for non-EU travelers who currently enjoy visa-free entry, including citizens of the United States.

The ETIAS authorization will entail a modest fee and will remain valid for three years, or until the associated passport expires, whichever comes first. As Europe continues to evolve its border management, staying informed about these digital tools and requirements will be crucial for a seamless travel experience.
