Waymo, a pioneering company in autonomous vehicle technology, is looking beyond its current robotaxi services towards a broader integration of its driverless systems. According to Waymo’s co-CEO, Dmitri Dolgov, the sophisticated AI driving technology currently deployed in their ride-hailing fleet is expected to eventually make its way into privately-owned automobiles.
During a recent interview with Stripe co-founder John Collison, Dolgov outlined a “path of convergence” for Waymo’s product development. This evolution suggests that the autonomous capabilities powering Waymo’s commercial ride-hailing operations could ultimately be offered as a feature in consumer vehicles. This strategic direction is particularly relevant for geographical areas where the commercial viability of operating a dedicated ride-hailing service might be limited due to lower population density or fewer daily trip requests.
Expanding Autonomous Reach Beyond Ride-Hailing
Dolgov clarified that while the foundational autonomous technology is robust and proven, the economic model for a ride-hailing service necessitates a certain level of demand density to be sustainable. He explained, “If you’re in the middle of nowhere and there’s just not enough density of the trips… does it make sense for the ride-hailing service that Waymo is running to have cars on standby? Probably not.” This insight highlights why integrating autonomous driving into personal cars represents a logical progression for making the technology accessible to a wider audience.
Presently, Waymo operates its commercial robotaxi services across 10 major U.S. metropolitan areas, demonstrating its operational scale by completing an impressive 500,000 paid rides each week.

Strategic Partnerships Drive Future Integration
Waymo has been actively exploring various commercial avenues beyond its established ride-hailing offerings, including the potential to license its cutting-edge technology to other automotive manufacturers. A significant move in this direction was announced in April 2025, when the Alphabet-backed firm established a “strategic partnership” with Toyota Motor Corporation. This collaboration aims to explore the integration of Waymo’s autonomous driving technology into personally-owned vehicles (POVs), with a strong emphasis on enhancing safety and user peace of mind.
The partnership with Toyota underscores a broader industry trend toward collaborative technological development to accelerate the adoption of advanced driver assistance and automated driving solutions. While Waymo continues to identify additional U.S. and international cities for its ride-hailing expansion, Dolgov’s long-term vision points towards a future where autonomous driving capabilities transcend being merely a service, becoming an intrinsic part of personal transportation for a much larger consumer base.
