U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that construction of the planned White House ballroom is proceeding “ahead of schedule and under budget,” despite an ongoing lawsuit seeking to halt the ambitious project. The President offered this update while displaying new architectural renderings of the facility, staunchly defending the initiative which necessitated the demolition of the White House East Wing.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, President Trump affirmed, “We’re doing very well, so we’re ahead of schedule.”
Project Scope and Security Features
President Trump elaborated on the ballroom’s design and purpose, describing it as essentially a “shed” covering a “massive” military complex situated underneath the new structure. He highlighted advanced security features, including “high-grade, bullet-proof” glass windows and a drone-proof roof. Trump acknowledged the necessity of such measures, remarking, “Unfortunately we’re living in an age where that is a good thing.”
While a firm completion date remains unconfirmed, the White House has previously indicated that the project is expected to be finished “long before the end” of Trump’s current term.
Facing Legal and Preservation Challenges
The White House ballroom project has encountered significant legal and political resistance since its inception. A prominent challenge comes from a lawsuit filed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The organization alleges that the administration bypassed mandatory review processes and failed to incorporate adequate public input during the project’s planning and approval stages.

A federal judge is currently deliberating whether to issue an injunction to temporarily halt the construction while the lawsuit proceeds, with a decision anticipated by the end of March. The $400 million ballroom project is part of a broader effort by President Trump to reshape various aspects of Washington, D.C., and is reportedly funded entirely through private donations.
